Equipment & Initial Costs
| Equipment | Est. Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pot (plastic or black plastic) | $5-$30 | Choose pots with large drainage holes. Black pots help warm roots |
| Soil (well-draining mix) | $8-$20 | Pumice, perlite, and akadama-based. Commercial agave mixes also work |
| Drainage stones (pumice/perlite) | $3-$8 | Further improves drainage. Fill bottom 1/4 of pot |
| Grow light (indoor) | $30-$150 | Essential for winter or indoor growing. Full-spectrum LED is ideal |
| Liquid fertilizer | $5-$15 | Use diluted, 1-2 times monthly during growing season (spring-fall) |
| Insecticide (systemic) | $5-$10 | Prevents agave snout weevil and scale insects. Use preventatively |
| Slow-release fertilizer | $5-$10 | Mix into soil when repotting for sustained nutrition |
| Thermometer/hygrometer | $5-$15 | Essential for winter care. Bring indoors below 5C (41F) |
Total Initial Cost: Approx. $66-$258 (pots, soil, light included)
Monthly Running Cost: Approx. $3-$10/month (fertilizer, water)
Daily Care Routine
Check sunlight exposure
Place where it gets 6+ hours direct sun. Indoors, run grow light 12-14 hours
Check soil dryness
Water 2-3 days after soil is completely dry. In winter, only 1-2 times per month
Watering (when dry only)
Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom. Avoid water pooling in the leaf rosette
Pest inspection (weekly)
Check base and leaf undersides for scale insects or snout weevils
Remove dead leaves (monthly)
Trim dried lower leaves with clean scissors. Improves appearance and airflow
Rotate pot (weekly)
Rotate 90 degrees to ensure even light exposure on all sides
Common Mistakes & Solutions
Overwatering causing root rot
Agave are drought-tolerant. Wait until soil is completely dry before watering. Be extra cautious in winter
Using poorly draining soil
Regular potting soil retains too much moisture. Use pumice/perlite-heavy mixes designed for succulents
Leaving outdoors in winter
Most agave suffer below 5C (41F). Bring indoors before first frost or protect with frost cloth
Missing agave snout weevil signs
Soft, mushy base is a red flag. Apply systemic insecticide preventatively on a regular schedule
Skipping repotting
Repot every 2 years. Root-bound plants stop growing and become prone to root rot
