FAQ

Can I grow aquatic plants without CO2?
Yes. Low-tech plants like Anubias, Java Fern, and mosses grow fine without CO2. However, many red plants and carpeting plants require it. Starting with no-CO2 plants is recommended for beginners.
What do I do about algae?
First, reduce lighting to 8 hours and increase water change frequency. Adding algae-eating crew like Amano shrimp or Otocinclus is also effective. Common causes: too much light, nutrient imbalance, or insufficient water changes.
Can I keep fish in a planted tank?
Absolutely. Small tetras, rasboras, and corydoras are great companions for planted tanks. Fish waste even provides nutrition for plants. However, avoid plant-eating fish like goldfish.
When should I replace the substrate?
Typically after 1-2 years, nutrients deplete and granules break down into mud. Replace when plant growth slows or pH becomes unstable. You can extend life by adding supplemental soil on top.
