First-Time Plant Buyer Checklist

お迎え準備チェックリストのイメージ

A complete guide for first-time plant buyers. Organized into three stages: before purchase, during purchase, and after purchase, covering every essential checkpoint.

📋Before Purchase (Preparation)8 items

1

Research the species

Check the encyclopedia and care guides for basic info. Understand growing difficulty, growth rate, mature size, and light/temperature needs.

2

Estimate care costs

Calculate initial costs (pot, soil, grow light, greenhouse) and ongoing costs (fertilizer, electricity, soil refresh). Use our cost calculator tools.

3

Secure space and light

Ensure enough room and adequate light for the mature plant. Plan for training and repotting space for climbing or large species.

4

Prepare equipment

Set up pots/saucers, soil mix, grow light, thermo-hygrometer, an air circulator, and a heater or greenhouse if needed, in advance.

5

Stock up on soil & fertilizer

Have the right soil mix (foliage, succulent, epiphyte, etc.) and fertilizer ready, plus a spare pot for repotting.

6

Test run the environment

Place a thermo-hygrometer in the spot and check temperature, humidity, and light over 1-2 days.

7

Check regulations

Verify the species isn't CITES-listed or a designated invasive plant. See our regulations guide for details.

8

Find info sources

Know which care guides, garden shops, or communities to turn to if pests or disorders appear.

🔍During Purchase (What to Check)8 items

1

Verify the grower's profile

Check verification badge, transaction history, and reviews. Confirm their growing setup and specialties.

2

Inspect the plant's condition

Check leaf firmness and color, new growth, root health (rootbound or rot signs), and pest marks (insects, mold, feeding damage). Ask the grower about anything unclear.

3

Request additional photos/videos

Ask for extra photos or videos beyond the listing. Verify actual color, size, and variegation.

4

Confirm species and cultivar

Verify species name (scientific name) and variegation/selected-strain info. Ask the grower if anything is unclear.

5

Ask about current care setup

Learn the grower's light, temperature, humidity, and watering routine so you can replicate it at home.

6

Confirm shipping method

Verify seasonal packaging (insulation, freeze protection, cushioning), carrier, and estimated delivery date. In cold months, request heat packs or a delivery-date hold to reduce freezing risk, and begin acclimation right after arrival.

7

Check guarantee/cancellation policy

Confirm how transit damage (leaf breakage, cold damage) is handled and the issue-resolution process with the grower.

8

Confirm payment method and timing

You pay the grower directly (bank transfer, cash on pickup, etc.). Agree on the timing (after inspection, before shipping, or after arrival) by message and keep a record. GrowerDirect holds no funds.

🏠After Purchase (First Week)8 items

1

Inspect upon arrival

Check the plant immediately upon opening. If there is leaf breakage, cold/heat damage, or notable decline, photograph or film it and message the grower within the guarantee window.

2

Acclimate

Don't place it in direct sun or dry air right away. Rest it in bright shade for several days to a week to ease shipping stress.

3

Let it settle

Avoid repotting or pruning right after arrival. Work done just after an environment change can weaken the plant.

4

First watering

Check the soil and water sparingly only if it is dry. Overwatering right after arrival causes root rot, so observe first.

5

Monitor temperature, humidity, and light

Check the spot's conditions closely during the first week. Watch for sunburn, cold, or drying out.

6

Daily leaf, growth, and pest checks

Observe leaf color and firmness, new growth, and pests daily. Consult a care guide or garden shop promptly if anything seems off.

7

Confirm delivery

Once the plant looks good, let the grower know it arrived safely. If you agreed to pay after arrival, pay by the agreed date.

8

Start a growth diary

Begin recording with our growth diary feature. Photo logs are a wonderful way to track progress over time.

⚠️If There Are Issues Upon Arrival

  • If you agreed to pay after arrival, tell the grower about the issue before making the payment.
  • Document the plant's condition with photos and videos.
  • Message the grower to report the situation.
  • If unresolved, contact our support team. We will respond promptly.
