Stunted Growth / CO2 and Light Deficiency

Aquatic Plants

A condition in which aquatic plant growth slows significantly or leaves become smaller than normal. It tends to occur when CO2 concentration, light intensity, water temperature, or a combination of these falls below the plant's requirements.

  • Leaves are small and stems grow thin and elongated (etiolated)
  • New shoot emergence is extremely slow or growth appears to have stopped
  • Leaves show poor coloration with pale green tones or reds failing to develop
  • Lower leaves die and fall due to insufficient light reaching the substrate

  • Insufficient CO2 supplementation or complete absence of CO2 injection
  • Light intensity does not meet the requirements of the plant species
  • Water temperature too low or too high, reducing metabolic activity
  • Aging lighting equipment with declining effective light output

Select lighting equipment suited to the light requirements of the plants and maintain CO2 injection equipment properly. Regularly replace and clean lighting fixtures to sustain adequate light output, and aim to keep water temperature stable at around 25°C.

Aquatic plant specialty stores can recommend specific improvements such as CO2 injection methods, appropriate lighting equipment, and timer settings based on tank size, plant species, and current lighting specifications, and can provide a comprehensive assessment of multiple factors contributing to stunted growth.
