關於大花蕙蘭
Cymbidium originates from mountainous regions of East and Southeast Asia, and has been cherished in Japan since the Edo period under the name "tōyōran" (Eastern orchid). In the early twentieth century, British horticulturalists developed large-flowered hybrid varieties, and most plants in circulation today trace their lineage to those crosses. The flower spike grows upright or in a graceful arch, carrying ten to twenty or more blooms measuring five to twelve centimeters across. Colors span white, yellow, pink, red, purple, and green, with distinctive lip markings that give each cultivar its own character. Nutrient reserves stored in the pseudobulbs allow flowers to last for weeks, making cut stems exceptional for arrangements. Among orchids commonly grown in Japan, cymbidium stands out for its cold hardiness, and with consistent care it rewards growers with reliable annual flowering — the primary reason it has earned such enduring popularity.
開始照料大花蕙蘭前需要了解的7件事
1Placement and Light
From spring to autumn, place cymbidiums outdoors in bright shade or direct morning sun. Intense summer sun can scorch leaves, so use shade cloth or a semi-shaded spot. In winter, move plants indoors to a bright windowsill and keep temperatures above 5°C.
2Summer Heat and Bud Set
To initiate flower buds, expose plants to temperatures around 30°C in midsummer, followed by a day-night temperature difference of 10°C or more in autumn. Without this thermal transition, flowering the following season may not occur. Keeping plants outdoors through summer is the single most important step for bud initiation.
3Watering Frequency
Cymbidiums are prone to root rot, so water thoroughly once the surface of the medium dries out and never let pots sit in standing water. During the growing season (spring to autumn), watering once or twice a week is typical; in winter, reduce to two or three times a month. Drying speed varies with medium type, so observe each plant individually.
4Fertilizing Schedule
During the growing season from spring to summer, apply a balanced slow-release or liquid fertilizer regularly to build up the pseudobulbs, which fuels the following year's bloom. Once flower spikes appear in autumn, reduce nitrogen and switch to a phosphorus- and potassium-rich formulation. No fertilizing is needed during winter dormancy.
5Repotting and Medium
Repot every two to three years, ideally in March or April after flowering. When roots become cramped, drainage and aeration decline. Move the plant into a slightly larger pot with fresh bark or sphagnum moss. For the first one to two weeks after repotting, avoid direct sun and keep watering minimal to let the roots settle.
6Pests and Diseases
Slugs and armyworms can damage new growths and flower buds during outdoor cultivation; check plants at night and use bait traps as needed. Botrytis (gray mold) causes brown spots on petals, so ensure good airflow and avoid excess humidity while plants are in bloom. Yellowing leaves often signal overwatering or root rot and should be investigated promptly.
7Choosing a Healthy Plant
When selecting a plant, look for glossy green leaves and firm, well-developed pseudobulbs. Avoid plants with brown rotted roots or leaves showing yellowing or spotting. Plants sold with visible flower spikes are often close to full bloom; once home, place them in a stable spot and avoid jostling them so the flowers last as long as possible.
大花蕙蘭的常見問題
- Q.Can cymbidiums be grown indoors year-round?
- A.Year-round indoor cultivation rarely provides the summer temperature fluctuation needed to initiate flower buds, so blooming becomes unreliable. Moving plants outdoors from spring through autumn — where they receive direct sunlight and natural temperature swings — is the most reliable way to ensure annual flowering.
- Q.What should I do with the flower spike after blooming?
- A.Once all flowers have faded, cut the spike off at its base with clean scissors. Leaving it attached wastes the plant's energy and slows recovery. Allow the cut end to dry, or apply a fungicidal powder to reduce the risk of infection.
- Q.Why won't my cymbidium bloom despite years of care?
- A.The most common reason is insufficient outdoor exposure in summer, which prevents flower bud initiation. Excessive nitrogen fertilizer promoting leafy growth, or overly warm indoor winters that prevent proper dormancy, are other frequent culprits. Focus on outdoor placement in summer and cooler nights (around 10°C) from autumn onward.
- Q.How strong is the fragrance of cymbidium flowers?
- A.Fragrance varies considerably by cultivar, ranging from virtually scentless to mildly sweet. Miniature and mid-size varieties tend to be more fragrant than large-flowered types. If possible, smell the flowers in person before purchasing to find a scent level that suits your preference.
