關於兜蘭

Paphiopedilum, whose name derives from the Greek for "Aphrodite's slipper," is a terrestrial orchid native to the forest floors of Southeast Asia, southern China, and eastern India. Its defining feature—the pouch-shaped lip at the flower's center—is an elegant evolutionary trap that lures insects for pollination. The color palette tends toward muted, complex combinations of green, brown, white, purple, and yellow, giving the genus a refined beauty distinct from more flamboyant orchids. Without pseudobulbs, Paphiopedilums cannot tolerate prolonged drought, but their tolerance for low light is a significant advantage for indoor growers. A single bloom persists for one to three months, and with attentive care the same plant can thrive for well over a decade.

開始照料兜蘭前需要了解的6件事

  1. 1Prefer Indirect Light

Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, so filtered light through a sheer curtain is ideal. A north- or east-facing windowsill provides sufficient brightness. Fluorescent or LED grow lights also work well for indoor cultivation.

  2. 2Water Sparingly

Paphiopedilums are prone to root rot, so allow the top of the growing medium to dry out before watering again. Avoid leaving standing water in saucers. Water more frequently during the growing season in spring through autumn, and reduce watering in winter.

  3. 3Ideal Temp 15–25°C

Paphiopedilums adapt well to typical indoor temperatures between 15 and 25°C. Prolonged exposure below 5°C in winter or above 30°C in summer can weaken the plant. Keep it away from direct airflow from heating or cooling vents.

  4. 4Repot Every 2–3 Years

Use a well-draining orchid mix such as bark, coconut husk chips, or sphagnum moss, and repot when roots fill the container. Spring after flowering is the ideal time to repot. Old medium breaks down over time and can harbor root rot, so timely repotting is important.

  5. 5Typically One Bloom per Stem

Most Paphiopedilum species produce a single flower per stem, which gives each bloom a striking presence and an impressively long display period. Flowering typically requires a mature, well-established plant, so it may take several years from a young offset. Patient, consistent care is the path to reliable blooming.

  6. 6Fertilize Lightly

Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half the recommended strength once or twice a month during the growing season in spring through autumn. Over-fertilizing can burn the roots, so less is more with Paphiopedilums. Reduce or stop feeding entirely during winter dormancy.

兜蘭的常見問題

Q.Is Paphiopedilum suitable for beginners?
A.Yes, with a few key points in mind. As long as you avoid direct sun and keep the medium consistently moist, Paphiopedilum is one of the more forgiving orchid genera for beginners.
Q.Why isn't my Paphiopedilum blooming?
A.The most common causes are insufficient light and lack of a day-to-night temperature drop. A differential of 5–10°C between day and night temperatures in autumn and winter helps trigger budding. Excess nitrogen fertilizer can also inhibit flower formation.
Q.Should I use sphagnum moss or bark?
A.Sphagnum moss retains more moisture and suits Paphiopedilum's need for consistent water. Bark drains faster and lowers the risk of root rot if you tend to overwater. For beginners, sphagnum moss is generally easier to manage.
Q.Why are my plant's leaves turning yellow?
A.Common causes include sun scorch, root rot, or natural senescence of older leaves. If new growth looks healthy, yellowing of the oldest leaves is a normal part of the plant's cycle. Check the roots—brown, mushy roots indicate rot and warrant repotting.
Q.How much does a Paphiopedilum typically cost?
A.Commonly available flowering plants typically range from around 1,500 to 5,000 yen in Japan. Rare species, primary species, or award-quality hybrids can run into the tens of thousands. Beginners are advised to start with widely available varieties that have well-documented care requirements.
