  The clarity of patterning (spots, lines, reticulation, etc.) appearing at the apex and the color contrast are at the core of its ornamental value. Pattern characteristics vary by variety and are evaluated accordingly.

• Plant body firmness and fullness

  High

  A plant body where two fused leaves maintain firm tension without wrinkles is a sign of good health.

• Shedding cycle and condition

  High

  Lithops undergo an annual shedding (renewal) cycle once per year. Specimens in the mature stage after shedding are easier to evaluate, but specimens mid-shedding require proper care.

• Body color · base color intensity

  Medium

  Whether the base color (cream, green, gray, brown, etc.) characteristic of each variety is displaying properly as a variety trait.

Good:

The apex patterning is clear and displays a recognizable pattern that is characteristic of the variety.

Caution:

If patterning is unclear or dull, it may indicate insufficient light or watering management issues.

Check plant body firmness and shedding condition

Good:

The plant body maintains firm tension without wrinkles. If in the mature stage after shedding, the condition is stable.

Caution:

If the plant body is wrinkled (indicating water deficiency) or if old outer skin remains during the shedding process, management attention is needed.

Check root and pot condition

Good:

Roots are firm and well-developed, with the plant body stable in the substrate.

Caution:

If roots are weak or the plant body is unstable, root rot or management issues may be present.
