柿是柿樹科柿屬的落葉喬木，據說原產於中國，在奈良時代之前就傳入日本。秋季結出的大果實呈橙色至朱紅色，是日本秋天的象徵，因其營養價值高，有「柿紅醫生青」的諺語。在盆栽中，老樹那些縱向裂開的粗樹皮和秋季結出的可愛果實是最大的魅力。葉子從春季的萌芽、夏季的濃綠到秋季的紅葉，四季變化，冬季落葉後留下的果實增添風情。被稱為「老鴉柿」的中國小果品種在盆栽中特別受歡迎，密集結出豌豆大小的小果實，蔚為壯觀。管理上喜歡光照，充足的日照關係到結果。澆水要避免乾燥，夏季頻繁澆水很重要。花芽長在前年枝的基部，強烈修剪會減少翌年的結果。換盆適期是春季，每2到3年換一次。
