蓮花掌為景天科蓮花掌屬的多肉植物，已知約35種。主要原產地為大西洋中的加那利群島，馬德拉、佛得角、摩洛哥、東非及也門也有部分物種分佈。莖頂形成扁平的蓮座，葉色因品種而異，從翠綠、黃綠、深紫到近乎黑色不等。最著名的是「黑法師（Aeonium arboreum 'Zwartkop'）」。冬型多肉植物，秋～春為成長期，夏季休眠且葉片閉合。成長較為緩慢，高度約30～100公分。喜光但需避免盛夏強直射光。秋～春時土壤乾燥即澆水，夏季應停止澆水或僅供極少量水分。比起過濕更能耐乾燥，但由於冬型特性，日本高溫多濕的夏季管理是最大課題。可通過扦插相對容易地繁殖。
