日本杉（Cryptomeria japonica）是柏科杉屬的常綠針葉樹，為日本特有屬與特有種，是日本最具代表性的針葉樹。廣泛自生於本州、四國、九州，屋久島的繩文杉（推定樹齡2000～7200年）等長壽的巨大個體聞名於世。葉片呈細針狀，螺旋形排列於枝條上；樹幹被棕色粗糙樹皮覆蓋，具有縱向條紋。雖為花粉症的致因植物，但作為日本林業的主要樹種，一直是日本里山景觀的核心。在盆栽領域中，多採用矮化品種（八房杉）或自然小型化的個體。筆直樹幹的凜冽姿態與古木時期具有力量感的樹皮是其看點。管理方面喜好日照充足、通風良好的戶外環境。澆水略多，不耐乾燥。特別須注意夏季高溫乾燥，避免西曬的放置位置較為適宜。每3～5年換盆一次，春季發芽前為最佳時機。修剪於秋冬休眠期進行。
