皐月杜鵑是杜鵑花科杜鵑屬的半常綠灌木，為日本固有種，自生於日本山間溪流沿岸的岩場。名稱源於舊曆5月（皐月）開花的習性。比杜鵑晚一個月，於5〜6月綻放鮮豔的花朵，根據品種呈現紅、粉紅、白、複色等多彩花色。同一株綻放多彩花朵的先祖返現象也是皐月杜鵑獨有的樂趣。在盆栽世界裡被譽為「開花盆栽之王」，日本各地都有皐月杜鵑盆栽愛好會，是人氣極高的樹種。自江戶時代起進行品種改良，目前已知有數千個品種。養護方面喜好酸性土，以鹿沼土為主體的土壤最為合適。日照環境可以是全日照或半日陰，但開花的充實度會隨著日照充足而提高。澆水方面忌乾旱，尤其在夏季應朝夕充分澆水。花謝後立即修剪，以促進來年的花芽形成。換盆間隔約2〜3年一次，最好在花謝後進行。
