日本木瓜為薔薇科木瓜屬的落葉灌木，原產中國，傳說於平安時代前傳入日本。春季（3～4月）在葉片展開前或展開的同時，在枝條上盛開鮮艷的朱紅色、白色、粉紅色或條紋狀花朵。秋季結出香氣怡人的黃綠色果實，不僅具有觀賞價值，也可用於製作果實酒。「木瓜」之名據說源於果實形狀與瓜相似。在盆栽領域，日本木瓜自古以來被視為「花卉類」而備受推崇，粗獷的樹皮與艷麗花朵的對比是其觀賞重點。由於生長為灌木狀，採用多幹的組合栽植風格也頗受歡迎。管理方面：喜好充足光照，使用排水良好的土壤。當表層土壤乾燥後澆透水。花謝後修剪新生枝條，花芽形成後自秋季起減少修剪。每2～3年於花謝後進行換盆，時機最佳。枝條容易密集，需定期進行整枝。
