紫藤為豆科紫藤屬落葉藤本植物，分布於中國、日本、韓國、越南及北美東部。在日本古籍《萬葉集》中即有記載，長垂的紫色花序與平安時代的貴族文化密切相關。4至5月開出帶甜香的青紫色（或白色）蝶形花，形成長達30至80公分的花穗，是盆栽中最豪華的開花樹種之一。盆栽培養中需在粗幹上建立扎實的根盤，在小盆內造型出令人聯想起真實藤架的樹形。花謝後的豆莢亦具觀賞價值。養護上喜好充足陽光，花芽分化需夏季的充足光照。澆水時忌乾燥，尤其在花芽充實的夏秋季節需防止缺水。花後立即修剪及秋季整枝將決定翌年的花況。植換應每2至3年進行一次，在芽萌動前的春季進行最為恰當。根系生長旺盛，若疏於植換則開花品質下降。
