蠟梅為蠟梅科蠟梅屬的落葉灌木，原產中國，傳入日本約在江戶時代初期。12月至2月間，在光禿的枝條上綻放半透明蠟質般的黃色花朵，散發甜蜜芳香。雖與梅（薔薇科）屬不同科屬，但因冬季開花似梅而得名「蠟梅」。亦稱「唐梅」。在盆栽藝術中，嚴冬中綻放的金黃色花朵與甘甜香氣營造獨特意趣。作為冬季盆栽架上花卉稀少時期的珍貴「花卉」而廣受愛好。「素心蠟梅」內花瓣亦呈黃色，香氣特別濃郁，盆栽中常見。管理上喜陽光充足，宜用排水良好的土壤。耐寒性強，可耐-10℃左右低溫。花芽著於當年枝上，花謝後須立即進行強修剪整形。換盆一般2～3年一次，以花後或秋季為佳。
