About this condition
Tiny mites that colonize the undersides of leaves under hot, dry conditions. Feeding damage causes stippled discoloration, and severe infestations can significantly weaken plants.
Common symptoms
- Tiny mites or fine webbing may be visible on leaf undersides
- White to yellow stippled speckling may spread across leaf surfaces
- Leaves may appear dull and lose their healthy sheen
- Leaves may yellow and drop when infestations are left untreated
Common causes
- Hot, low-humidity conditions (especially from midsummer through autumn)
- Poorly ventilated, dry indoor placement
- Spread from infested neighboring plants or newly purchased stock
- Dry growing conditions without regular leaf misting
Prevention (growing conditions & routine care)
Regularly misting leaves to maintain humidity around foliage helps deter spider mites. Good air circulation and adequate light are also beneficial. Newly purchased plants should be quarantined and observed before placing near other plants.
