Utricularia (bladderwort), known in Japanese as Mimikakigusa or Tanukimo, is a small carnivorous plant native to wetlands and shallow water, capturing tiny organisms like water fleas using microscopic bladder traps hidden in soil or water. Utricularia, the bladderwort genus, is one of the largest genera of carnivorous plants with over 250 species distributed across wetlands, waterways, and even rocky tropical surfaces worldwide. In Japan, the native species are called Mimikakigusa — a name inspired by the flower's resemblance to an ear-cleaning stick. The plant's defining feature is its bladder trap: countless microscopic pouches embedded in water or mud that suck in water fleas, nematodes, and other tiny organisms in under half a millisecond when triggered. Without roots, the plant drifts freely in water or creeps along muddy substrates, its slender stems giving it a graceful, delicate appearance. From early summer to autumn it sends up thin flower stalks bearing charming snapdragon-like blooms in purple, white, or yellow. Care is relatively straightforward — keep it consistently moist, use soft water, and avoid fertilizer — making it an ideal conversation-piece plant for terrariums or water garden arrangements.

  1. 1How the Traps Work

    The bladder traps of Utricularia are tiny sac-like structures ranging from 0.2 to several millimeters, using negative pressure to instantly suck in water fleas and protozoa. These traps are difficult to see with the naked eye but fascinating to observe under a magnifying glass or microscope. Because the plant actively captures prey on its own, supplemental feeding is generally unnecessary.

    Utricularia thrives in nutrient-poor, acidic to slightly acidic water or substrates such as peat moss or sphagnum. Avoid rich soil or direct use of tap water, as chlorine and minerals can harm the plant. Rainwater, purified water, or distilled water are ideal choices for long-term health.

    Some species grow terrestrially in wet substrate (terrestrial types) while others float freely in water (aquatic types), and their care requirements differ accordingly. Aquatic species can be kept in aquariums or outdoor ponds, while terrestrial species require consistently moist substrate. A.Adequate light is the most important factor — placing it where it receives several hours of direct sun significantly improves flowering. Temperate species often bloom in response to warming temperatures from spring into summer. Regular water changes also help, as poor water quality can inhibit flowering.
Q.Will it die in winter?
A.Temperate species may appear to die back in winter, but they form turions (dormant buds) underwater and are not dead. Keep the container above 0°C in a frost-free location and growth will resume in spring. Tropical species need to be kept indoors in a warm environment through winter.
Q.Can it be grown in water alone without soil?
A.Free-floating species such as Utricularia bifida can be grown floating on water without any soil. Use soft water such as rainwater or purified water and change it regularly. Species that prefer a substrate grow more stably with sphagnum moss or akadama as a base.
Q.Is it safe to move it outdoors immediately after purchase?
A.Sudden exposure to intense direct sunlight can bleach plants that were kept indoors. Acclimate the plant gradually over one to two weeks in a partially shaded spot before moving it to full sun. Once adjusted, outdoor conditions generally promote more vigorous growth.
