萩是豆科萩属的落叶灌木，分布于日本、朝鲜半岛、中国和北美。作为"秋季七草"之一，在《万叶集》中多有记载，是日本人最亲切的秋季花木之一。在秋季（8～10月），纤细、呈弧形的枝条上绽放着紫红色或白色的蝶形小花，数量众多，姿态优雅别致。有"宫城野萩""山萩""圆叶萩"等多个品种。在盆栽艺术中，作为秋草盆栽的代表，悬崖式造型最受欢迎。下垂的枝条呈弧形，无数小花绽放，具有独特的美感。每年春季在靠近地面处进行强剪，促进新枝生长，可在短期内塑造树形。管理要点是喜欢阳光充足，日照越充分花开越繁茂。浇水时可略干燥但开花期间应避免干旱。换盆应在每年或每两年春季萌芽前进行。由于根系生长旺盛，需注意防止根部拥挤。
