日本柏是柏科扁柏属的常绿针叶树，主要自生于日本中部地区，为日本特有种。在日本建筑和工艺中被誉为"木材之王"，如法隆寺等古代寺庙建筑中广泛使用，历史悠久。香气宜人的黄白色木材耐久性高，至今仍作为高级建筑材料受珍视。叶片呈鳞状且有光泽，枝条背面可见白色Y字形气孔线。树皮赤褐色，纵向剥落。在盆栽中常使用"日本柏矮化品种（八房性）"，该品种叶片特别密集，生长缓慢，更适合盆栽培养。作为常绿树，全年保持美丽的绿色，并可享受日本柏特有的精油香气。管理上宜置于光线充足、通风良好的室外环境。浇水方面，待表土干燥后充分灌水，避免过湿。通过修剪和摘芽使枝条紧密。植土更换宜每3～5年进行一次，春季为最佳时期。
