柿是柿科柿属的落叶乔木，原产于中国，据称在奈良时代之前就传入日本。秋季成熟为橙红至朱红色的大型果实，是日本秋天的代表景象，有谚语说"柿子红了医生就失业了"，足见其营养价值之高。在盆栽艺术中，老树纵裂的粗糙树皮和秋季结出的小果实最具魅力。叶片从春季萌芽的嫩绿、夏季的深绿、秋季的红叶，到冬季落叶后仍保留的果实，随季节变化，营造出不同意趣。名为"老鸦柿"的中国产小果品种作为实物盆栽特别受欢迎，豆粒般的小果实累累结满枝头，蔚为壮观。管理方面喜阳光充足，充足的日照直接影响结果情况。浇水方面怕干旱，夏季需要经常浇水。花芽长在前一年枝条的基部，过度修剪会减少来年的结果。换盆周期为2～3年一次，春季最为合适。
