日本野茉莉是野茉莉科野茉莉属的落叶乔木，分布于日本及东亚地区。5～6月，在叶片下方开出无数白色五瓣钟形花朵，呈下垂状。花期结束后会结出椭圆形果实，果皮含有刺激性皂甙，因此自古以来就被用作鱼毒用于捕鱼，从"エゴ（辛辣）ノキ"这个名字就能看出来。初夏花期时，树枝被白色花朵覆盖的景象非常美丽，具有山野草的自然气息。在盆栽艺术中，叶片下方下垂白花的优雅气质特别受推崇，纤细的枝条和娇小的叶片相结合，能够创造出洗练的树形。丛生造型特别受欢迎，从多条树干展开的自然树形很有魅力。养护方面喜欢从半阴到向阳的环境，夏季强烈直射阳光会导致叶片灼伤。浇水应避免干燥，表土干透后即刻浇水。修剪在花后进行，用以整形。换盆每2～3年进行一次，春季萌芽前最合适。
