桑属于桑科桑属的落叶乔木，原产于南亚，分布于欧洲、南非、美洲等世界各地。在日本，自古以来就是饲养蚕虫（用于提取丝绸原料）不可或缺的树木，曾经在农村广泛种植。初夏成熟的酸甜果实（桑葚）可食用，桑叶也可制成茶饮。在盆景栽培中，对剪裁非常强韧，萌芽力旺盛，易于造型，操作简便。老树的树皮纵裂粗糙，呈现沉厚的古木风韵。由于叶片较大，需要通过叶刈来促进长出小叶。秋季黄叶也很美观。管理非常容易，在日照充足、通风良好的户外养护。浇水可略干一些，但要注意避免过湿。由于生长旺盛，需要经常剪裁和摘芽。换盆每2～3年一次，在春季萌芽前为最佳时期。
