筒叶大戟是生长在马达加斯加南部干燥地区的小型大戟。顾名思义，圆筒形的独特叶片是其最大特征，这种在其他植物中看不到的独特叶形大大提升了其收集价值。株体小型，从扁平的块根或肥大的茎基部伸出细枝，长有圆筒状叶片。根据亚种和变种，叶形和块根形状略有不同。花小且不显眼。受伤时会流出白色乳液（有毒）。生长缓慢。管理时应在直射日光至明亮散射光下养护，使用超排水性土壤。浇水在生育期应适度控制，冬季断水。极易受过度潮湿影响，需重点防止根腐。耐寒性低，需在10℃以上的室内管理。因其株型小巧、占用空间少，且从独特的叶形能感受到极简风格，作为一个颇受欢迎的品种广为人知。
