棒棰树是生长在南非卡罗地区至东开普州干旱岩石地带的番杏植物。成长的块根大部分埋在地下，地表只能看到树枝，采取独特的生长形态。地下块根非常巨大并能膨胀。它开出粉红色的可爱花朵。作为南非产番杏，与马达加斯加产的相比，耐寒性更强，管理更容易。管理上喜欢直射阳光，超排水性土壤最合适。浇水在生长期适量给予，冬季断水。耐寒性相对较高，短时间内甚至能耐受接近0℃的温度。这是一个以地下大块根的生长为乐趣的品种，作为南非产番杏的入门种，很受欢迎。
