1. 1Light & Placement

   Anacharis prefers bright conditions but should be kept out of direct sunlight — indirect light near a window or an aquarium light works well. Without enough light, stems tend to stretch and grow leggy, so aim for several hours of brightness each day.

2. 2Water Temperature

   This plant tolerates cold water well and rarely dies back even as temperatures drop. Sustained high heat through summer can damage the leaves, though, so keep it in a well-ventilated spot and avoid extreme warmth.

Note, however, that Anacharis (Egeria densa) is listed as a "priority control" invasive species on Japan's Ministry of the Environment list of alien species harmful to ecosystems, and it has naturalized in rivers and lakes across the country. Use extra plants within your aquarium, and dry out leftover plants and trimmings before throwing them away with household waste. Never dump it into rivers or ponds, and if you grow it in an outdoor container, make sure rainwater can't make it overflow and wash plants out.

5. 5Regular Trimming

   Growth is vigorous, so stems will quickly lengthen if left unchecked — trim periodically to keep the size in check. Trimmed sections can be reused as new cuttings, so nothing goes to waste.

6. 6Water Quality

   Because it tolerates dirty water and absorbs nutrients as it grows, Anacharis can help keep tank water more stable. Just watch the density, since overgrowth can block water flow.

7. 7Choosing a Plant

   Look for firm stems with deep green, evenly whorled leaves at each node. Avoid stems with discolored cut ends or leaves that look translucent or mushy.
