星葉草

Pogostemon stellatus, also known by its former scientific name Eusteralis stellata, is a stem plant in the mint family whose narrow leaves grow in dense whorls along the stem, forming star-shaped tiers that stack up as it grows. Viewed from above, the whorls fan out like stars, making it a striking centerpiece for aquascapes. Under strong light, with nitrate and phosphate kept on the low side, the foliage shifts toward purple and orange tones, adding vivid color contrast to a tank. That said, it needs both intense lighting and CO2 injection to thrive, and growth can stall unexpectedly even under good conditions, which is why it's considered a plant for experienced aquarists. It's typically maintained over time through repeated trimming and replanting of cuttings.

星葉草的基本資料

栽培難度
適合高級者
壽命
Maintained in aquaria by replanting cuttings
體型
Stems 20–60 cm tall, whorls 6–14 cm across
適宜溫度
24〜28℃
澆水
Needs constant CO2 and stable fertilisation
Lighting
Strong light is essential; without it the lower leaves drop quickly.
CO2 & Fertilizer
Add CO2 constantly and keep nitrate, phosphate and trace elements stable. Yellow to white leaves indicate iron or trace-element shortage.
Water Temperature & Quality
Optimum 24–28°C at slightly acidic pH 5–7.
Substrate & Attachment
Plant as a midground focal point or in the background, spaced to allow for the wide whorls.
Trimming & Propagation
Side shoots root easily; tops can be replanted in place to renew the group.
Cautions
Growth may stall suddenly even in good conditions, and it dislikes abrupt changes. Never release plants into the wild.

關於星葉草

Pogostemon stellatus (formerly Eusteralis stellata) is a stem plant with star-shaped whorled leaves that flush purple to orange under strong light. An advanced-level aquarium plant growing 20-60cm tall with 6-14cm whorls.

開始照料星葉草前需要了解的7件事

  1. 1Placement and Light

Position it where it receives the strongest light in the tank, ideally away from the shade of taller plants. Since stems can reach 20 to 60cm, plan its placement with that eventual height in mind.

  2. 2CO2 Injection Is Essential

Steady growth depends on having both strong lighting and CO2 injection in place together. If either is lacking, growth can become erratic, and even under otherwise good conditions the plant may suddenly stop growing.

  3. 3Keep Fertilizing Steady and Trace Elements Supplied

The purple-to-orange coloring tends to appear when nitrate and phosphate run a little low, but cutting back fertilizer too far is a mistake. Stability matters more than concentration, so dose nitrate, phosphate and trace elements consistently and avoid sudden changes. Leaves turning yellow to whitish are a sign of iron or trace-element deficiency.

  4. 4Trimming and Replanting

This is a plant maintained by trimming the growing tip and replanting the cutting, a process known as pruning and re-rooting. Older stems tend to shed their lower leaves, so regular replanting keeps the plant looking fresh.

  5. 5Temperature and Seasonal Care

Growth rhythm can be thrown off by shifts in water temperature or lighting duration, so keeping conditions as stable as possible across the seasons matters. Sudden environmental changes are one reason growth can stall even when conditions otherwise look fine.

  6. 6Choosing a Healthy Stem

When choosing a stem, look for one that's sturdy with tightly packed leaves, and avoid stems with thinning or dropped lower leaves. Ones with neatly stacked whorls tend to establish and grow more reliably afterward.

  7. 7Bringing Out the Color

Under strong light, with nitrate and phosphate running a little low, the leaves gradually shift from green toward purple and orange in a gradient. Since this plant is considered suitable for experienced keepers, prioritizing light and CO2 setup first and keeping your fertilizer dosing steady tends to make the coloring more consistent.

星葉草的常見問題

Q.Can beginners grow Pogostemon stellatus?
A.Pogostemon stellatus requires both strong lighting and CO2 injection, and it's generally considered an advanced-level plant. Growth can stall unexpectedly even under otherwise good conditions, so it's best introduced once you're more experienced with planted tanks.
Q.How large does it grow?
A.Stems reach roughly 20 to 60cm in height, with the star-shaped leaf whorls spanning about 6 to 14cm across. The exact growth rate and final size vary depending on lighting, CO2, and nutrient balance in the tank.
Q.How do I get vivid purple or orange coloring?
A.Strong light with nitrate and phosphate kept slightly on the low side tends to bring out the purple-to-orange coloring. Keep iron and trace elements supplied, though, and keep your dosing steady rather than changing it suddenly.
Q.Can growth suddenly stop even in good conditions?
A.Yes, this is a plant known to occasionally stall in growth even when conditions look otherwise favorable. Small shifts in light, CO2, or nutrient balance may be involved, so it helps to avoid sudden changes to the setup.
Q.How do I maintain it over the long term?
A.The basic approach is to repeatedly trim the growing tip and replant the cutting, a cycle known as pruning and re-rooting. Removing older stems with damaged lower leaves while keeping younger ones helps the plant retain its shape.
