Root Rot

🔎 依症狀查找
Caudex Plants

關於這種疾病

Root rot is one of the most serious causes of death in caudex plants, occurring when overwatering or poor drainage deprives roots of oxygen and leads to decay. It frequently develops when watering continues through the dormant period and is often well advanced by the time it is noticed.

主要症狀

  • The caudex becomes soft and yields to gentle pressure
  • Discoloration (brown to black) appears near the base of the plant
  • Leaves suddenly wilt or drop all at once without changing color first
  • When removed from the pot, roots are found to be black, decayed, and foul-smelling

主要原因

  • Excessive watering during the dormant season (primarily winter)
  • Use of poorly draining soil with excessively high water retention
  • Persistent waterlogging from water pooling in the saucer
  • Management errors during the rainy season or winter when low temperatures and overwatering combine

預防(栽培環境與日常管理)

Use a well-draining soil mix (such as akadama, perlite, and kanuma) with drainage holes in the pot. During the dormant season (winter), significantly reduce or completely withhold watering, providing water only during the active growing season. Never allow water to pool in saucers and allow the soil to dry out thoroughly between waterings.

Consulting a specialty nursery or experienced caudex grower is the most effective approach for root rot. These specialists can evaluate the degree of decay, assess recovery potential, and provide advice on appropriate soil mixes and future management tailored to the specific species.
