About this condition
Scale insects are sap-sucking pests with hard shells or waxy coverings that attach firmly to trunks, branches, and leaves. Late detection can severely weaken the tree and often leads to concurrent sooty mold.
Common symptoms
- White, brown, or black shell-like or cottony deposits are found on trunks, branches, and leaves
- Leaves yellow and leaf drop increases
- Branch dieback occurs and trunk growth stagnates
- Sooty mold may develop concurrently
Common causes
- Poorly ventilated and enclosed placement for the tree
- Overly dense foliage preventing air from reaching the interior
- Spread and dispersal facilitated by ants
- Establishment in hot and dry conditions
Prevention (growing conditions & routine care)
Ensure good air circulation around the tree and keep foliage from becoming overly dense through regular pruning. Inspect trunk and branch undersides frequently. Persistent ant activity climbing the trunk may indicate scale insects.
