About this condition
Pest damage caused by insects with hard shell-like coverings that attach to leaves and stems and feed on plant sap, potentially weakening the agave. Heavy infestations can affect overall plant vigor.
Common symptoms
- White or gray-brown small shell-like deposits appear on leaves and stems
- Feeding sites may turn yellow or become sunken
- Overall plant growth slows or declines
- Sooty mold (black sooty deposits) may develop concurrently
Common causes
- Growing in dry conditions that favor scale insects
- Management in poorly ventilated enclosed spaces
- Introduction via other plants or newly purchased specimens
- Ants facilitating the spread of scale insects
Prevention (growing conditions & routine care)
Inspect the undersides of leaves and stems of newly purchased plants before introducing them to other plants. Maintain good airflow and inspect regularly for early detection.
