About this condition
Pest damage caused by waxy, powdery insects that infest roots and feed on root sap, significantly impeding plant growth. The infestation can be difficult to identify from above-ground symptoms alone.
Common symptoms
- Overall plant growth stalls or deteriorates
- Leaves may turn yellow or pale
- White cottony masses may be found on roots when removed from the pot
- Plant appears unhealthy despite adequate watering and light
Common causes
- Growing in dry soil conditions favored by root mealybugs
- Cultivation in hot and dry environments
- Introduction through infested soil from other plants
- Entry and establishment through root wounds
Prevention (growing conditions & routine care)
Use sterile soil and avoid sharing saucers between plants. Inspect the root zone of purchased plants regularly for early detection. Avoid excessively dry conditions and maintain root health with appropriate watering.
