Root Rot

About this condition

A serious condition in which roots decay due to overwatering or poor drainage, causing significant deterioration of the entire plant — one of the most common problems in succulent and cactus cultivation.

Common symptoms

Lower leaves and the base of the stem become soft and mushy
The stem base and lower stem turn brown to black
Leaves drop off easily in succession
The plant remains wilted after watering without recovering

Common causes

Frequent or excessive watering keeping the soil constantly moist
Use of poorly draining soil mix or pots without adequate drainage
Persistently wet conditions during cool or cold periods
Root-bound plants with lost aeration in the root zone

Prevention (growing conditions & routine care)

Use well-draining succulent/cactus mix and pots with drainage holes. Water only when soil is completely dry, and significantly reduce watering during the dormant season (winter).

Specialist nurseries can advise on how to inspect root condition, handle decayed roots, select appropriate soil and pots, and manage the plant after repotting. If damage is extensive, guidance on leaf propagation or stem cutting may also be available.
