Ctenanthe is a genus of perennials in the family Marantaceae, native to Central and South America. The genus contains around 16 species, and ones such as C. setosa and C. oppenheimiana are sold as houseplants. Closely related to Calathea and Maranta, ctenanthes share the same family's hallmark decorative foliage — bold patterns of white, silver, and green on their leaf surfaces — and perform the same nyctinastic leaf movements at night. Often described as hardier and more forgiving than calathea, they are a popular choice for those who love marantaceae foliage but find calatheas too demanding. They tolerate a range of light conditions from bright indirect light to partial shade.
