Ctenanthe
IntermediateA Calathea relative with beautiful leaf patterns. Enjoyable for its prayer movements, folding leaves at night.
About
Ctenanthe is a genus of perennials in the family Marantaceae, native to Central and South America. Closely related to Calathea and Maranta, ctenanthes share the same family's hallmark decorative foliage — bold patterns of white, silver, and green on their leaf surfaces — and perform the same nyctinastic leaf movements at night. Often described as hardier and more forgiving than calathea, they are a popular choice for those who love marantaceae foliage but find calatheas too demanding. They tolerate a range of light conditions from bright indirect light to partial shade. Keep the soil consistently slightly moist, and mist regularly to maintain humidity and prevent leaf-tip browning. A minimum temperature of 13°C should be maintained. Propagated by division or stem cuttings. An excellent gateway plant for those interested in the prayer plant family.
