Radermachera sinica, sold in Japan as 'Stereospermum', is an evergreen tree in the trumpet-vine family (Bignoniaceae), native to subtropical mountains in southern China and Taiwan. It was formerly placed in Stereospermum (as S. sinicum), hence the Japanese trade name, but its correct name today is Radermachera sinica. English names include China doll and emerald tree. In the wild it can reach 30 m, with twice-pinnate leaves 20-70 cm long made up of many glossy leaflets 2-4 cm long. In spring and early summer it opens fragrant, white to yellow trumpet flowers at night that last only one night. The long, twisted seed pods give it the name serpent tree. Indoor plants rarely flower and usually stay around 1.2-1.8 m. It likes bright indirect light and a mix that is consistently moist but not wet; it drops leaves if allowed to dry out, yet also wilts when overwatered, so watering takes some practice. In Japan it is widely sold as a houseplant.
