杉木（杉）是柏科杉属的常绿针叶树，作为日本特有属和特有种，是日本的代表针叶树。广泛分布在本州、四国和九州，如屋久岛的绳文杉（估计树龄2000～7200年）一样，以长寿和巨大的个体而闻名。叶细长针状，呈螺旋状排列，树干被褐色纵纹的粗糙树皮覆盖。虽然因花粉症致敏而闻名，但作为日本林业主要树种，长期以来一直是日本里山景观的核心树木。在盆景中，使用矮性品种（八房杉）或自然小型化的个体。笔直的直干树形凛然挺立，古木时期粗糙有力的树皮为主要欣赏点。管理需要日照充足、通风良好的户外环境。浇水量稍多，忌干燥。夏季高温干燥需特别注意，尤其要避免放在西晒的位置。换盆间隔为3～5年一次，春季新芽萌出前为最佳时期。修剪在秋季至冬季的休眠期进行。
