木瓜是蔷薇科木瓜属落叶灌木，据说原产中国，传说在日本平安时代以前就已传入。春季（3～4月）叶子展开前或同时，在枝条上绽放满树鲜艳的朱红色、白色、粉红色和条纹样的花朵。秋季会结出香气浓郁的黄绿色果实，不仅具有观赏价值，也可用于制作果实酒。"木瓜"的字意据说源于果实形状类似于瓜。在盆栽中，木瓜自古以来就作为"花卉类"备受喜爱，荒糙的树干肌理与艳丽的花朵的对比是其看点。由于生长成灌木状，多根树干组成的丛生盆栽风格也很受欢迎。养护上喜欢阳光充足，使用排水良好的土壤。浇水时表土干了就要充分浇透。花后对生长的新枝要适当修剪，花芽形成后秋冬季要控制修剪。换盆周期为2～3年，花后是最佳时期。由于枝条容易拥挤，需要定期整枝。
