Myriophyllum, the water milfoils, is a genus of about 70 aquatic plants in the family Haloragaceae, found in lakes and rivers from temperate to tropical regions worldwide. The finely feathered leaves are arranged in whorls along the stem and spread out softly under water. They are rooted stem plants, used in aquariums as background plants whose fine foliage sways gracefully in the current, and have long been grown in goldfish tanks as one of the plants sold as goldfish weed. The best-known species in the trade is red myriophyllum (M. tuberculatum), whose leaves turn red in good conditions; leaf color and difficulty vary widely between species. The related parrot's feather (M. aquaticum) is a Specified Invasive Alien Species in Japan, and its cultivation, storage and transfer are banned.
