About

Yucca is a genus of about 50 species of shrubs and trees in the family Asparagaceae, native to the arid and semi-arid regions of North America, from Panama to southern Canada. Characterised by rosettes of stiff, sword-shaped leaves with sharply pointed tips, yuccas bring a striking architectural presence to interiors and are popularly known in Japan as the 'youth tree' (青年の木). Highly adapted to drought, they require watering only once or twice a month, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. They prefer strong light and perform best near a sunny window, though they tolerate lower light at the cost of leaf colour. Growth is slow to moderate, reaching 0.5–2 m indoors. Well-draining soil is essential, as their fine roots are susceptible to rot in waterlogged conditions. Their bold, sculptural silhouette pairs well with modern and botanical interior styles.
