About

Zygopetalum is a genus of 14 orchid species native to humid montane forests and epiphytic habitats in tropical and subtropical South America, primarily Brazil. Plants grow 30–50 cm with pseudobulbs bearing leathery leaves. The flowers, 6–10 cm across, feature greenish to dark brown sepals and petals contrasting with a white lip marked with bold purple to blue-violet veining, and emit a strong, sweet hyacinth-like fragrance. Flowering occurs mainly November to March, with five to ten flowers per inflorescence. Preferred conditions: cool to intermediate temperatures (12–25°C), bright indirect light, 60–70% humidity, good air circulation, and a well-draining bark–sphagnum–perlite mix.
