紫藤是豆科紫藤属的落叶攀援木本植物，分布于中国、日本、韩国、越南及北美东部。在日本，紫藤自古就被记载于《万叶集》中，长垂的紫藤色花序与平安时代贵族文化紧密相连。4~5月，散发甘香的青紫色（或白色）蝶形花形成30~80厘米长的花穗，是盆栽中最豪华的花卉树种之一。在盆栽中，通过培养粗壮的树干和扎实的根系，在小盆中创造出令人联想到真实紫藤棚的树形。花后结实的荚果也成为观赏对象。管理上喜阳光，花芽分化需要夏季充足的日照。浇水时需避免干燥，特别要防止夏秋季花芽充实期缺水。花后立即修剪和秋季整枝决定来年的开花情况。植换周期为2~3年一次，在芽萌发前的春季进行。由于根系生长旺盛，若忽视植换，开花会变差。
