蜡梅是蜡梅科蜡梅属的落叶灌木，原产于中国，在江户时代初期传入日本。从12月到2月，在落叶的光秃秃的枝条上开放半透明的蜡质般的黄色花朵，散发甘甜的芳香。虽然与梅花（蔷薇科）属于不同的属，但因冬季开放与梅花相似的花朵而被命名为"蜡梅"。也被称为"唐梅"。在盆栽中，在严冬的寒冷中开放的金色花朵和甘甜的香气产生独特的趣味。作为冬季盆栽架上花卉稀少时期的珍贵"开花植物"而受到喜爱。"素心蜡梅"的内部花瓣也是黄色的，因香气特别强烈而在盆栽中经常使用。管理方面喜欢阳光充足，使用排水良好的土壤。耐寒性强，可耐受约-10℃的温度。花芽长在当年的枝条上，所以在花后立即进行较强的修剪来整形。换盆通常每2-3年进行一次，花后或秋季是最佳时期。
