(Tylecodon reticulatus)

Tylecodon reticulatus is a caudex-forming succulent in the Crassulaceae family, known in Japanese as "Banbutsusou." It's a winter-growing plant: fresh, fleshy leaves cluster at the branch tips through autumn, winter, and spring, then drop as the plant goes dormant for summer. Its most distinctive feature is what happens after flowering — the spent flower stalks don't fall away but dry in place, branching finely into a silvery, thorn-like mesh that gradually wraps around the plant's stout trunk. Growth is extremely slow, with seed-grown plants typically taking 10 to 20 years to reach an impressive mature form, making this a species to enjoy over the long haul. Because it calls for switching watering routines with the seasons and other seasonal-type know-how, it's generally considered a plant for intermediate growers.

(Tylecodon reticulatus)

Tylecodon reticulatus (Banbutsusou) is a winter-growing caudex succulent whose dried flower stalks form a silvery thorn-like mesh around its trunk. An intermediate-level species prized for its slow, 10-20 year journey to maturity.

  1. 1Placement and airflow

During the growing season, keep the plant somewhere bright with good air circulation. In midsummer it goes dormant, so shifting it to bright partial shade rather than harsh direct sun eases the stress on the plant.

  2. 2Seasonal watering rhythm

While leaves are out from autumn through spring, water thoroughly once the soil surface dries. After it drops its leaves and goes dormant in summer, cut back watering sharply and let it rest on the moisture stored in its trunk.

  3. 3Fast-draining soil

A fast-draining, mineral-heavy caudex mix suits this species well. Keep organic content low, since excess moisture around the roots is the main cause of rot.

  4. 4Repot sparingly

Because growth is so slow, frequent repotting isn't necessary. Repot only every few years, ideally early in the growing season when root disturbance is best tolerated.

  5. 5Managing summer dormancy

In summer the plant naturally sheds its leaves and goes dormant — this is a normal cycle, not a sign of dying. Keep it in a well-ventilated spot with minimal watering to see it through the season.

  6. 6Cold protection in winter

Being a "winter-growing" type doesn't mean it's frost-hardy — it simply happens to grow during the cooler months. When frost or freezing is a risk, bring it indoors to a bright windowsill.

  7. 7What to look for when choosing a plant

A firm, undamaged trunk and a naturally intact web of dried flower stalks at the branch tips are good signs of a plant that's been developing steadily. Since growth is so slow, the plant's overall size and dome shape are also useful clues when choosing one.

Q.It's a "winter grower" — can it stay outside all winter?
A."Winter-growing" just means it grows during the cooler months, not that it's cold-hardy. In areas or periods with frost or freezing risk, bring it indoors to a bright spot.
Q.The leaves dropped in summer — has it died?
A.Shedding leaves in summer is this species' normal dormancy cycle, not a sign of death. As long as the trunk stays firm, keep watering minimal and simply wait it out.
Q.What's the thorny mesh covering the trunk?
A.It's made of spent flower stalks that dry in place instead of falling off, branching finely into a silvery web. It's part of the plant's character and doesn't need to be removed.
Q.How long until it looks like a mature plant?
A.Growth is extremely slow — seed-grown plants generally take around 10 to 20 years to develop an impressive mature form. It's a species best enjoyed on a long timeline.
Q.Can beginners grow this plant?
A.It's generally considered suited to intermediate growers, since it helps to understand winter-grower-specific care like switching watering with the seasons. Some prior experience with succulents or caudex plants makes it easier to manage.
