About

Anubias barteri var. glabra (Araceae) ranges widely across tropical West Africa from Guinea to Gabon, forming dense stands on banks and rocks of forest streams. In practice the name covers several differently sized A. barteri forms with elliptic to lanceolate leaves, and the boundary with other varieties is not always clear. Slim leaves are the identifier; the similar var. angustifolia has even longer blades. Smaller plants imported from Cameroon are still sold under the synonym 'Anubias minima', large narrow-leaved plants as 'Anubias lanceolata', and plants traded as 'Kruising' also belong here. It was once sold as 'Anubias afzelii', but the true A. afzelii is a much larger species. In the aquarium it reaches about 10–20 cm and is best kept out of strong light in the shade of larger plants. Specialist shops in Japan also offer variegated plants.
