Cryptocoryne usteriana is a large aroid reaching 70 cm, from the island of Guimaras in the Philippines, where it grows mostly submerged in rather slow rivers. It has long been known as a robust, undemanding large Crypt. Long, embossed leaves 3–5 cm wide identify it; with good light and fertiliser the upper side becomes dark or bronze-green and the underside wine red (depending on form and conditions the upper side may be green to brownish and the underside whitish green). It is often confused with, and sold as, the even larger C. aponogetifolia from south-eastern Luzon. The two were long considered one species until Josef Bogner showed in 1983 that they are distinct; C. usteriana has shorter blades that are usually less bullate. It tolerates hard, alkaline water and is not eaten by fish, so it suits Tanganyika and Malawi cichlid tanks. It spreads by long runners. Specialist shops in Japan stock it from time to time.
