Tilia miqueliana, known in Japan as Bodaiju, is a deciduous tree in the linden genus (Tilia, family Malvaceae) native to China and planted in Japan mainly at temples. Though botanically distinct from the Indian sacred fig (Ficus religiosa, the Bodhi tree) under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, it has been planted at Japanese temples as a symbolic substitute for centuries. The characteristic heart-shaped leaves and fragrant pale yellow summer flowers are the species' most distinctive features.
