About

Pinguicula gypsicola is a specialized Mexican butterwort native to gypsum (calcium sulfate) outcrops in Nuevo León and Tamaulipas states, northeastern Mexico—its species name literally meaning 'gypsum-dweller.' It is adapted to the nutrient-poor, highly mineral alkaline substrate of exposed gypsum and limestone cliff faces. The leaves are narrower and more translucent than many other Mexican Pinguicula, giving the plant a delicate, refined appearance. It undergoes seasonal dimorphism, forming a compact, non-carnivorous winter rosette in cooler months. Flowers are pale lilac to violet. Cultivation should use well-draining, calcium-rich media (gypsum chips, limestone grit, perlite) at slightly alkaline pH; overwatering is highly detrimental. Slightly hard water suits this species better than pure rainwater. Bright indirect light and temperatures of 15–25°C are recommended.
