About

Pinguicula moranensis is a Mexican butterwort distributed from Mexico to Guatemala, inhabiting montane rocky outcrops and pine-oak forest margins at 1,200–3,000 m elevation. Its large, succulent leaves are covered with glandular mucilage that passively traps small insects such as fungus gnats. The species displays a pronounced seasonal dimorphism: during the warm growing season it produces broad, flat carnivorous rosettes and an extended succession of attractive pink to magenta flowers, while in cooler months it contracts into a tight, non-carnivorous, succulent-like winter rosette. Cultivation is relatively straightforward using mineral-based, slightly acidic to neutral media (sphagnum-sand-perlite mixes), with watering from above and care taken to avoid waterlogging. Bright direct to indirect light and temperatures of 15–28°C are recommended. It is the standard introductory Mexican Pinguicula.
