Venus Flytrap Red Dragon

Red Dragon (Dionaea muscipula 'Red Dragon') is one of the most widely cultivated red-pigmented cultivars of the Venus flytrap. Under strong direct sunlight, the entire plant—including traps, petioles, and even the trap interior—develops a deep crimson coloration that inspired its name. Like the wild-type species, it requires nutrient-poor, acidic media (sphagnum or peat-perlite), tray watering with pure or rainwater, and strong sunlight to maintain its vivid red color; insufficient light causes the plant to revert to greenish tones. A mandatory winter dormancy at 5–10°C is essential. Adult plants typically reach 5–10 cm in diameter. The cultivar's striking appearance makes it a perennial favorite among carnivorous plant collectors. Individual plants live roughly 5–10 years, but Venus flytraps are perennials that can be maintained across generations through continued division and repotting, so the common impression that they "die quickly" is mostly due to care mistakes. In particular, blackening and wilting of the above-ground parts in winter is normal dormancy, not death, so it's crucial not to discard them mistakenly. The bulbs (corms) underground remain alive during dormancy and will sprout new growth in spring. The three major causes of death are "heated environments that prevent dormancy," "mineral buildup from tap water," and "fertilizing." Following the same approach as the base species—pure water, tray watering, no fertilizer, and cool winter dormancy—ensures you can enjoy them for years.
