After winter dormancy, as temperatures begin to exceed 10°C, Venus flytraps awaken from dormancy and new shoots begin to emerge. Leaves that emerge in spring are often larger and more vigorous than winter leaves.

During this period, the trap leaves opening and closing multiple times a day is not uncommon. When an insect touches the sensory hairs (trigger hairs) on the inside of the leaf, the closing mechanism is triggered within 0.1 seconds. Since insect activity is also active in spring, natural prey capture opportunities increase.

The basic watering method is bottom watering (placing the pot on a tray filled with water). In April and May, maintain the water level at 1–2 cm and always keep the base moist. Acidic soil mixed with peat moss and Kanuma soil is suitable for the growing medium. Use soft water (rainwater, distilled water, or RO water), and avoid excessive minerals from calcium and magnesium in tap water, as this damages the roots.

Summer (June–August): Vigorous Growth and Peak Prey Capture Season

Summer is when Venus flytraps grow most actively in temperatures of 25–30°C. Large trap leaves unfold one after another, and the entire plant increases in volume.

Regarding feeding frequency, in natural conditions, feeding once every 2–3 weeks is sufficient. There is no need to actively provide insects by hand, as insects naturally enter in outdoor conditions. For indoor cultivation, feeding once or twice a month with small ants or live prey to a single leaf is adequate. Excessive feeding exhausts the leaves and causes them to blacken and fall off.

During this period, the soil dries easily, so be careful not to let the water level drop. On extremely hot days exceeding 35°C, providing shade cloth (30–50%) is effective in preventing excessive leaf scorch.

Autumn (September–November): Slowing Growth and Dormancy Preparation

Beginning in autumn when temperatures drop below 15°C, Venus flytraps begin preparing for dormancy. Leaf growth slows, and new leaves become smaller than in summer. Additionally, the opening and closing speed of trap leaves gradually decreases, with longer times required for closing.

From October onward, gradually reduce the water level, and in November, stop bottom watering and switch to watering when the soil surface becomes slightly dry. At this time, there is no need to fertilize; the important thing is to help the plant naturally enter dormancy.

Toward the end of autumn, old leaves may blacken and die, which is natural leaf replacement. Removing blackened leaves at the base maintains good air circulation.

Winter (December–February): Dormancy Period and Required Conditions

As a temperate plant, Venus flytraps require an essential "cold dormancy period." Exposure to low temperatures of approximately 5–10°C for 2–3 months resets the growth rhythm for the following spring and promotes healthy growth.

It is well known that without this dormancy period, the plant gradually weakens and often dies within a few years. Keeping it indoors in warm conditions year-round results in insufficient dormancy, so ideally, in winter, place the plant in an outdoor location protected from frost (such as under a balcony eave) or in an unheated greenhouse or garage (maintaining 5–10°C).

Prey capture activity nearly stops during dormancy, and even if the trigger is stimulated, the leaves do not close or close very slowly. Watering should be minimal—once or twice a month—and maintain the soil so it doesn't dry out completely. Bottom watering is generally not done during dormancy.

Feeding Frequency and Plant Vigor Relationship

The trap-closing action of a Venus flytrap consumes large amounts of ATP energy. It typically takes 1–2 weeks for a single leaf to close, digest, absorb nutrients, and reopen, and the leaf loses its function after several feedings.

From this, if feeding frequency is too high, leaves are exhausted more quickly and the plant's overall vigor declines. Artificial foods (such as cheese or ham) cannot be digested and are strictly forbidden. The recommended feeding frequency is once or twice a month during the spring–summer growth period. During other seasons, active feeding is not necessary.

Leaves blackening (digestion completion and natural leaf senescence) is natural, but if leaves disappear rapidly due to overfeeding, this is a sign that management needs to be reviewed.
