About
Calathea orbifolia is a perennial in the family Marantaceae, native to Bolivia. Celebrated for its extraordinarily large, rounded leaves with alternating silver-green and deep green stripes, it is among the most visually striking members of the Calathea genus — sometimes called the 'Queen of Houseplants'. Individual leaves can reach 30–40 cm in diameter. Like other calatheas, it performs nyctinastic leaf movements, folding its leaves upward at night. Bright indirect light is optimal; direct sun bleaches and scorches the leaf patterns. Keep the soil consistently slightly moist, watering when the surface begins to dry. Sensitive to chlorine and fluoride in tap water; filtered or rainwater is preferred. High humidity (50–70%) is essential — in dry air the leaves curl and the stripe contrast diminishes. Its exceptional leaf size and pattern make a bold statement in any interior.
