Pinstripe Calathea
IntermediateGoeppertia ornata
The 'pinstripe' calathea: dark green leaves lined with fine pale pink or white stripes and purplish undersides. The leaves fold up at night. It is native to Colombia and Venezuela.
About
Goeppertia ornata (formerly Calathea ornata) is an evergreen perennial of the prayer-plant family (Marantaceae) from rainforest understorey in Colombia and Venezuela. Its dark green leaves carry fine parallel stripes of pale pink to white, and the undersides are purple when young. Like other calatheas, the leaves fold up in the evening and open in the morning. However, according to Marantaceae specialist Helen Kennedy, most plants sold as 'pinstripe calathea' are actually G. sanderiana or G. majestica; true G. ornata is difficult to grow and had disappeared from cultivation by the mid-1990s. The genuine species can be recognised by fine hairs on the upper leaf surface. In Japan plants are sold as both 'Ornata' and 'Sanderiana', so the name alone does not settle the identity. Care is the same for all of them: high humidity and bright shade. It is a standard houseplant widely available in Japanese garden centres and online.
