About

Pachira aquatica is an evergreen tree in the family Malvaceae, native to tropical wetlands and riverbanks in Central and South America, capable of reaching 18 m in the wild. In Japan and much of Asia, it is celebrated as the 'money tree' or 'good luck tree' (発財樹), widely gifted for business openings and believed to attract prosperity in feng shui. It is commonly sold with its multiple trunks braided together, and its palmate leaves with five to seven leaflets are said to symbolise 'five fingers grasping wealth'. It prefers bright indoor conditions away from direct sunlight. Water thoroughly after the soil dries, reducing frequency in winter; well-draining soil is essential to prevent root rot. Shade-tolerant and hardy, it requires relatively little attention, making it one of the most popular gift plants and office plants throughout East Asia.
